Bullying-free Internet: Cyber-bullying

www.internetsinacoso.comCyber-bullying can be defined as a psychological aggression, maintained and repeatedly carried out during a period of time, committed by one or various individuals against others, through the use of new technologies.

Cyber-bullying produces a devastating effect on it´s victims, undermining their well being and invading the individual´s necessary personal space, such as their rest time and study habits.

As a complement to the Cyber-bullying Help Line (www.acosoescolar.info) done by Protégeles in 2005, in 2009 a Help Line against cyber-bullying through new technologies is created http://www.internetsinacoso.com

Bullying-free Internet

Through the Help Line http://www.internetsinacoso.com the follwoing objectives are pursued:

Awareness

When there´s a probem it´s important that it is perceived by the society and by the different groups of people invovled, in this case the minors. Creating awareness in minors regarding the existing problem of cyber-bullying is a first step towards terminating it.

Informing

Clear and contrasted information on cyber-bullying is offered through the Help Line. It is not only general information on the problem, but also practical advice for those people who are suffering cyber-bullying, behaviour protocol, as well as information on the legal aspects of cyber-bullying or the implications of cyber-bullying in relation to personal data protection.

Mediate / Intervene

The Help line can be a way for a minor suffering cyber-bullying to contact Protégeles and receive our help to solve the problem, ranging from intervention with the school to psychological treatment of the victim, and if necessary legal orientation to make a formal complaint in court.

Safer Internet Day 2009

The Safer Internet International Day is an event which takes place once a year during the month of February, in which more than 50 countries participate across the 5 continents.

This event is organized by INSAFE, the European network for Safer Internet and in Spain by the Association PROTEGELES as a spanish representation of INSAFE.

In 2009 the main theme raised is the cyber-bullying prevention and school bullying through internet, for which an advertisement was made with the objective of creating awareness on cyber-bullying.
